in the summer. new york city officials say the gunman is dead. the gunman was killed. we believe as many as eight people may have been shot and wounded. we know of no fatalities among the victims, only the gunman. we don't know any of the details. a couple key questions -- who is this person? what were they doing? was it the motive? was it as was earlier reported, possibly a robbery gone bad. let's go to ron allen, who is near the scene. what are you seeing and hearing, ron? >> reporter: it's -- it's virtually shut down. i'm at the corner of 34th between broadway and fifth avenue, just a block or so from part of the empire state building talking to people in the crowd about what they saw and heard, because the people have basically evacuated most of that area in front of the empire state building. everyone is in complete shock, because, as you said, this is a heavily traveled area for tourists. there are countless people taking pictures, trying to see the sights, what have you. this happened completely out of the blue at the height of -- the rush hour was just over, and traffic is relati

by the new york city police commissioner is one that the suspected shooter was wearing a suit. he was wearing a business suit, carrying a brief kais when the shooting occurred. what also we know now that we can report is that there was a dispute going on for a year between jeffrey johnson, the suspected shooter, and the victim. the 41-year-old man who he shot and killed. some sort of dispute was happening between them at their workplace. hasan imports where they made jewelry and women's apparel. they say there were legal complaints between the two of them going on for the last year. so that may have been a motive in this, and that is what we know. we do also know that one of the other victims that was shot but not killed, and again, the nine others shot are expected to make a full recovery and one of them was from north carolina. police do not know yet where the rest of them were from, and the police believe that the suspected shooter only had one gun. a .45 caliber handgun with a magazine that could hold eight bullets. now the reason why police believe that some of the other victims that wer

imagine home people on the sidewalks and streets of new york city at that hour? this is a scene above on board the chopper. i'm not sure if this is wabc or wnyw. the local fill wrats here this new york scrambled to get in the scene. all traffic is stopped. obvious why they would do that now. buses in the middle of this large intersection in the middle of manhattan. jamie: we do know what it is like at 9:00 in the morning there. this is the number one tourist attraction i imagine anyone coming to new york city, especially before the holiday weekend coming up quite soon, the empire state building. outside many people. this is a bus lane in front of it that goes down the busy, bysy street, 9:00 in the morning. so many people getting off to go to work. a busy commercial and residential area off to the sides. people all over. they're calling it chaotic. bill: fire department in new york saying several injured. how many that number is, we do not know. a fox reporter is enroute. we'll bring you an update here in new york city. stay tuned for that breaking news this morning. jamie: also break

minutes. joining me on the phone to talk about the investigation is gill alba a former new york city detective and founder of alba investigations, so, gill, walk us through here, and the eyewitnesses see the gunman open fire and kill one man and then walk casually off before very vigilant construction worker followed that gunman, and then when he saw counter terrorism investigators working the area, let them know, and they pursued this suspect and then gun fire ensued. so give me an idea now, once the gun fire ensued and that suspect was killed, give me an idea of where the investigation goes from here, because the investigators from police to fbi continue to collect evidence. what is the critical question or two that they are trying to answer by way of collecting more evidence? >> well, the immediate answer is how many gunmen, how many people are shot, and where were they shot? that is why they caromed off the area blocks away and checked the buildings out, because maybe shot somebody else in the building. to me, what this gunman tells me is that he was after his boss and trying to
